New Orleans’ Sexual Health, Education & Rights Block Party
Glenis Scott, Jr., MPH, led our inaugural Block Party in July 2024. Mr. Scott is currently the BIPOC Program Director within CrescentCare’s prevention department where he manages No Wrap No Tap & The Movement, two outreach programs aimed at engaging the African American community in the greater New Orleans area. With Mr. Scott’s leadership, we convened over 20 community organizations and governmental programs to provide direct services, information and resources on sexual, maternal, reproductive health, sexual violence prevention and other community health and support. We reached 250+ attendees during this three-hour inaugural event. District D Councilman Green attended to speak to community members about the importance of the collective resources present and WDSU News covered the event. We celebrated our community with free food, kids’ activities, a raffle, and music. Here is our 2024 impact report.
We are hosting New Orleans' 2nd Annual Sexual Health, Education, and Rights Block Party on Sat., April 5, 2025! The Greater New Orleans Caring Collective will host the Block Party at 5523 St Claude Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117. Interested partner organizations, RSVP here. We look forward to collaborating with you!
Sexual Health Education Capacity Building for Youth-Serving Organizations and School-Based Staff
Sexual and Reproductive Health Specialist at the New Orleans Health Department, Ryann Martinek, MPH, is developing free sexual health and healthy relationship education workshops for school-based staff and youth-serving organizations. Through The SHER Lab, Tulane students will assess the current landscape of sexual health education initiatives in Louisiana, and collaborate on developing and evaluating NOHD’s specialized training workshops. The big picture goal is to help shift the paradigm from outsourced sexual health education to sustainable, school-based initiatives where designated school staff can receive training and implement sex education modules for consistent, high-quality instruction in schools across Louisiana. We also aim to empower adults working in youth-serving organizations with the skills and resources to have age-appropriate conversations about healthy relationships.
Black Birth Matters
Our lab will produce an impact report for the the Birthmark Doula Collective’s Black Birth Matters Summit, and collaborate to develop ongoing organizational assessment tools. The Black Birth Matters annual summit focuses on the intersecting issues of birth and social justice, with a special emphasis on centering the black experience. This gathering is an opportunity to advocate for better birth outcomes and experiences for black families through arts engagement, discussions, panels, and networking sessions.
Friends with Benefits & Conversations with Unc
Morris Singletary has developed the ongoing programming Friends with Benefits (FWB) & Conversations with Unc (CWU). Mr. Singletary is the Founder and Executive Director of The Pozitive2Positive Initiative, a grassroots organization dedicated to HIV prevention, education, linkage to care, and destigmatization. FWB, launched in 2023, engages black, brown, and latinx communities in New Orleans through themed, peer-group-specific events focused on HIV education, testing, and care linkage. CWU, launched in mid-2023, provides group support for individuals living with HIV, covering topics from managing diagnosis to living fully with HIV. Our lab supports The Pozitive2Positive Initiative by providing technical assistance and student collaborators to implement and evaluate this programming.
